Pell defends handling of sexual misconduct case

LAS VEGAS -- The Nevada Gaming Control Board announced Friday it is removing Nevada Gaming Commission President Paul Yap and his assistant, Carolyn McCord, from their positions.

The Board has placed the three-member regulatory authority in the hands of retired Supreme Court Chief Justice William G. Rehnquist and state lawmakers.

Yap, 51, and McCord, 52, were appointed by the board to fill the two positions that were vacated by Supreme Court Chief Justice Rehnquist in July, 2013, when the board appointed the former to fill Rehnquist's judicial vacancy on the board.

According to the board's website, the former clerks were appointed by a state law.

As a condition of re-election in October, 2013, Rehnquist appointed Yap, who has been president of the NGCB since 2001, to replace Rehnquist's retirement.

In a written statement about the board's move, Yap said, "I am very pleased with how things worked out when I was brought on to fill Rehnquist's [judicial vacancy] earlier this year."

In his brief statement, Yap thanked his colleagues for their support and said he intends to remain an active member of the board.

Yap retired at the end of 2013 and will be leaving the NGCB to head Nevada's Department of Gaming Enforcement.

The board's decision follows more than a year of debate about whether the board would need a lawmaking body to make its regulations and enforce existing laws.

Rehnquist, who served as a judge in Nevada from 1987 to 1990, created the NGCB in 1984 and served as president for 13 years before his retirement in 2012.

He has since said it is the responsibility of state legislators to make the law governing Nevada casinos.

A petition circulated in 2013 calling for Yap to be removed from his post as commissioner attracted more than 20,000 signatures. The petition was certified by the board by Dec. 17.

Inquiry launched into police car crash of former Newcastle forward Sam Bradford.

A jury had been told how the incident had taken place on the way to watch his wife giving birth to the couple's fourth child and that he, his pregnant wife and his two children were on the terrace at a private party in the early hours of the morning.

Mr Brittan, 52, from North Shields, had been standing next to his wife at the scene of the crash before the incident, which happened in the village of Molesworth in Hounslow on March 14, 2011.

He was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries, before Mr Brittan's four children took the tragedy further by reporting the crash to police.

Now the court heard how police tracked down a man who was living on a boat on the terrace of the estate and later arrested the man for possessing child abuse images in an attempt to try to prevent the crash.

The trial at Highbury Magistrates' Court heard the driver of the car involved in the alleged serious incident told officers the incident began just before midnight and that he was at the house of a friend who had just had a baby girl.

But Mr Brittan was still at home when police arrived, but not when a member of the public rang to report hearing banging and shouting and being told that they had a "very distressed man in the house".

When Mr Brittan arrived at the scene, he discovered the family had been taken to hospital and when he asked who was in the house, he was told by police he was "a friend with a partner".

When he moved the family onto the terrace, police found evidence that a friend was there at the time, who had come in to help with the child.

Giving evidence, the man said: "I came down the road looking for Sam, he was in the house, there was a man with a flat-screen TV on there as well and he was yelling and saying he had a baby girl.

"And my friend said: 'Don't you care? He's a police officer here.' But I said: 'Yeah'.

"And I pulled up next to Sam, Sam asked why I did that and I said: 'Well I was talking to a friend of ours.'

"And we had been talking about going to a party he had invited me and a friend and, well, then we all got on this flat-screen TV and he said to me, 'You're not going to believe what is going on are you? The police have been here all night!'"
